Baranquilla Carnival is a huge four-day party that sees the people of the city take to the streets for a dazzling display of colour, salsa and infectious revelry.

The queen of the carnival is chosen in the October of the previous year so that she can prepare herself for the demanding carnival schedule. Another important character who must be chosen is King Momo. Whoever plays this Dionysian figure has to be a pillar of the community, who has taken part in the carnival since his childhood and is well known for his carnival spirit.

For several Saturdays before carnival begins, dance troupes parade through the streets to rehearse their dances. The pre-carnival activities draw to a close at the end of January, when the carnival proclamation is read out. This is a law stating that everyone must enjoy themselves, dance and party wildly.

Saturday begins with the Battle of the Flowers and a float parade comprised of the greatest, most colourful creations. La Gran Parada is a day of masks and disguises. The queen and her entourage of princes and princesses dance through the streets accompanied by the best carnival band, who play gaitas (giant recorders) and beat out the carnival rhythms on drums.

Monday is marked by an Orchestra Festival, with Caribbean and Latin bands competing in an almighty sound-clash. Tuesday signals the end of carnival, announced by the burial of "Joselito Carnival", who is mourned, by everyone, with real tears.

It's ultimately the dancing which makes Baranquilla one of the best carnivals to visit in Latin America. Most of the dances are strongly influenced by African traditions, especially from the Congo. One of the greatest spectacles is the Garabato, or "Dance of the Sickle", in which sickle-carrying men and women in straw hats and white face-paint perform an allegorical dance about life and death. The Congo dance is also worth looking out for, if only to see the towering paper-flower headpieces some of the dignified-looking men have to wear.

This is one party you don't want to miss.

The Barranquilla Carnival is the second largest carnival in South America, declared by the UNESCO, a historical world heritage. Dance with our women, party all night long with the tambora and the gaita rythms, sensual dances of our afro-caribbean heritage.

Meet Beautiful Ladies from Barranquilla

Barranquilla’s streets are filled with all the bustle and motion of a Middle Eastern marketplace. One hears a strange mixture of languages in the crowded bars and cafes, where Chinese, Arabs, Americans, Frenchmen and Italians speak to each other, and where the Spanish of the native Colombian is sometimes drowned Out altogether in the conversation of the streets. There are few cities in the world more cosmopolitan and worldly than Barranquilla, and there are few cities where pleasures are more robust and where life is lived more fully and enthusiastically.
