HISTORYThe Spanish conqueror Sebastian de Belalcazar, who came from Peru and was under Francisco Pizarro’s forces; came to the presently Valle del Cauca and founded for the first time the city of Cali in the region of Calima which in that time was populated by the Indians “Gorrones”, best known for their belligerence.
The foundation was verified the 25th of July 1536 and the new village was called “Santiago de Cali”, because that day was celebrated Santiago Apostle’s festivity. About the name of the city, some people attribute it due to a mispronunciation of the word “Lili”, which was the name Indians referred to the river that was close and it meant “white ground” or just because it was the name of the cacique who lived there like it happened in other cases.
GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS
Cali, Capital of Valle del Cauca, Located in a Valley formed by the mountains of the Andean region at 1.049 meters above sea level, approximately 3.280 feet. The average temperature in Cali oscillates between 18ºC (64F) and 32ºC (89F), there are isolated rains during the months of March, April and May, just as in October, November and December. Cali as the other places of the country, doesn’t have seasons; in fact, its weather is quiet similar as living an eternal spring. Its population has around 2.085.159 inhabitants.
LIFE IN CALI
Being one of the oldest cities, it feels like the youngest spirit Colombian city, thanks to the happiness of its people and to the growth speed that transformed the village with less than one hundred thousand inhabitants fifty years ago, in the third development point of the country, when the Government and the landowners undertake a deeply transformation of the territory through a hydrologic control of the basin, roads construction, electrification and other services.
